Funding sustainable mobility for a carbon-neutral city

Mobility is one of the key issues of human existence. It is vital to any attractive and future-proof economy and ensures we have a high standard of living. Without this mobility, people and companies alike would have a limited space, in which to accomplish things. But there are also downsides to mobility, especially in terms of the environment, accidents and noise pollution. The effects of mobility can be keenly felt in large cities especially. Funding schemes can help to better promote sustainable solutions for eco-friendly, low-emission, quiet journeys and zero-emission commercial transport, while at the same time making mobility future-proof. The State of Berlin is funding this transformation and in particular empowers frequent travellers and companies that have to make regular short trips around the city with subsidies to cover the costs required for more sustainable mobility.

Mobility and climate action

Road traffic contributes significantly to CO² emissions. Reducing emissions requires extensive measures. In particular, it requires transitioning to sustainable and eco-friendly means of transport. Bridges to the future are already being built with new solutions for low-emission drive systems - such as electrical vehicles and cargo bikes - plus eco-friendly fuels and vehicles. The funding available in Berlin is intended to promote the rapid spread and establishment of eco-friendly mobility solutions.

Mobility and easing the burden on urban commercial transport

Vehicles which drive short routes between stops and delivery addresses put a major strain on densely populated areas like Berlin in particular. They take up a lot of space, create high emissions levels and increase the amount of maintenance required on the road network. By transitioning to cargo bikes, companies, associations and independent businesspeople in Berlin can make a significant contribution to making transport compatible with the city. The State of Berlin offers relevant grants to cover the costs of purchasing cargo bikes and transitioning to e-mobility.

Funding for sustainable mobility concepts

The electrification of vehicles in Berlin is making a significant contribution to dramatically reducing CO2 emissions. But this transition requires more than just replacing fuel-powered vehicles with electric counterparts or alternative means of transport, it's also about building a matching charging infrastructure within Berlin.

Funding schemes aim to encourage small and medium-sized enterprises in Berlin that require a vehicle to carry out their business to transition to secure and sustainable mobility concepts. Businesses in Berlin have been receiving support since 2019 in the form of grants for procuring electric-powered vehicles or for establishing an infrastructure of charging stations, and advice on e-mobility.

Safe transport is also a major issue in our metropolis. With funding for turn assistance systems for heavy goods vehicles (HGVs) available from the end of 2020, Berlin is getting ahead of the legal requirement to install turn assistance systems in new vehicles and is already on the road to safer highways.

Starting on 10 May 2021, associations, freelancers and companies located in Berlin can receive grants for up to 10 transport vehicles. Funding is available for conventional cargo bikes, electric-powered bikes and trailers designed for transporting goods.
